MLS Prediction table: week 15

The Whitecaps continue undefeated, Charlotte has ended their losing streak, and we went from an absurd amount of scoreless draws to multi-goal draws. With more than 50 goals scored, the weekend was much more exciting than midweek. We’ll have another matchday tomorrow, so we can expect some poorer soccer like in previous midweek games. We’ll see if it means fewer goals or more mistakes.

Mistakes like the gaffe that was Garces’ clearance that led to the goal that led to another loss for the LA Galaxy. The Galaxy now has a 0.27 PPG record. If they want to get into the playoffs, the chances are they’ll need about 2.16 PPG in the next 19 games. That’s about 45 points total, which is what I assume will be the sweet spot for a playoff game in a weaker Western Conference. For San Diego, El Chucky Lozano continues to add to his tally and Anders Dreyer now has 6 goal contributions in 5 games.

For their next fixtures I predict:

Seattle Sounders FC v San Diego FCTie, because Seattle struggles to score against stronger teams and San Diego has been better.

LA Galaxy v San Jose Earthquakes San Jose takes the win because the Galaxy are the Galaxy and Bruce Arena is coaching the highest scoring team in the league. He might smirk a smile at the thought of continuing to pile pain onto his former team.

Real Salt Lake took the lead within a minute and added another just 3 minutes later to end up losing to the Whitecaps. The Whitecaps responded promptly to draw it within the first half for Vite to win it at the tail end of the game in stoppage time. Brian White has 10 goals in 11 matches. If he stays healthy, he should be in the Top 3 list for the Golden Boot. I don’t give him the edge due to the Gold Cup where he is likely to be called into the final roster.

For these two teams and their midweek match-ups, I predict:

Austin FC v Real Salt LakeAustin FC because RSL has poorer form.

Vancouver Whitecaps v Minnesota UnitedMinnesota United… because Vancouver can’t keep getting away with it and they have to travel to Mexico City to take on Cruz Azul for the CONCACAF Champions Cup on the weekend. Minnesota has been a good team that has traveled and gotten unlikely results like their win in NY and in Austin.

For LAFC, The Black and Gold go back to LA with a decent draw after going down 2–0 in Montreal to tie it 2–2. Giroud even managed to get on the scoreboard. They’ll hope that helps their chances against Club America. Las Aguilas just wrapped up their domestic season with a 2–0 loss to Los Diablos de Toluca in the LIGA MX Finals. Club America now relinquish the throne after being champions for 3 tournaments in a row.

This upcoming matchup for LAFC and Las Aguilas is to qualify for the Club World Cup after Leon was kicked out due to having the same ownership group as C.F. Pachuca. With overlapping fan bases due to the Mexican/Mexican American culture, it’ll be a big occasion. LAFC gets a midweek bye to prepare for the match.

My prediction for this one is LAFC because of the home advantage and solid form.

Back to MLS play with Charlotte FC against the Crew. Zaha got his first two assists against Columbus and helped them win 3–2. Their loss streak is over and they’ll travel to NYRB. Pep Biel also got a goal and an assist for his first set of goal contributions since April 19th. U.S. coach, Pochettino, will be happy with his MLS call-ups since many of them scored this weekend including a brace from Patrick Agyemang. Midweek, Columbus hosts Nashville SC without Patrick Schulte who will be sidelined for multiple weeks with a oblique injury.

For predictions in midweek:

Columbus Crew v Nashville SCColumbus Crew takes it.

New York Red Bulls v Charlotte FCDraw because every matchday is bound to have some. Both have injuries and are one point separated in the table. New York is defensively better and at home though.

The Chicago Fire continues with their wide-swinging pendulum of performances with 2 red cards to help secure a defeat against NYCFC. Brian Gutierrez is so fun to watch but he has 4 yellows and has now picked up a red. He’ll be missed when Chicago takes on Orlando City on the weekend. Both NYCFC and Chicago have a midweek bye.

Rest of predictions for the midweek based on vibes, struggles, and form:

Atlanta United v Orlando CityDraw, because while Atlanta scored as many goals in one game as they had since the start of April, they’ll have to take on a good Orlando team. An Orlando team that has 12 goals in 5 games while Atlanta has no clean sheets in 12 matches. I do think both teams should get on the scoreboard.

DC United v New England RevolutionNew England Revolution, because I don’t see any wins for DC United without Benteke. I’m so sorry.

FC Cincinnati v FC DallasFC Cincinnati, because Lucho Acosta will not be able to be the game changer for a mid-table FC Dallas on his first return to Cincinnati since his trade.

Inter Miami v CF MontrealInter Miami CF due to being at home and Montreal being bad.

Toronto FC v Philadelphia UnionPhiladelphia Union, because Toronto will probably score but not be good enough against first-place Union.

Portland Timbers v Colorado RapidsPortland Timbers due to home advantage and being offensively sound.
