MLS Prediction table: week 14
Alexander Gonzalez
May 22nd, 2025
We are knee-deep in the Delaware river that is the 2025 MLS season, currently led by Philadelphia Union. Before the beginning of it, I had made some predictions on where each team would end up. It was based on previous year results, incoming/outgoing transfers, and vibes. Especially vibes. It’s MLS after all. Chaos reigns supreme After Dark. There’s a new club tournament in the middle of the season… not not that one, the other one… There’s an international tournament in the middle of it… yeah, that one. Added on top to the rest of the uncertainty in an unbalanced schedule, travel, and funny money that we’ve all grown to love tells how unpredictable it can be.
That’s a lot of soccer…
So, let’s get to Week 14.
Week 14 Results
Vancouver has not lost since March 22nd across all competitions. Adding the Saprissa loss in Costa Rica for CONCACAF Champions Cup, that makes two total losses. That last loss was against an unpredictable, Berhalter-led Chicago Fire. The Whitecaps are exciting. They pickup unexpected results, have dominated Inter Miami, and are now our favorite underdog in CCC. The roster didn’t have too many major changes from last year, but their midfielders have more freedom to choose and move around the pitch, and they have the talent to make it work. They are favorites for the Canadian Championship, again, and are two weeks away from going to Mexico to face-off in the final of CCC against Cruz Azul. It’ll be tough, they have RSL on Saturday after a midweek trip to Winnipeg against Valour FC. Then they’ll have Minnesota visit, midweek, before they travel to Mexico. I’d predict 1 or 2 points from these two MLS fixtures because they have so many games to play so soon.
CONCACAF Champions Cup Bracket
Chicago Fire and the New England Revolution had a bye midweek so here they are back in action. The Fire destroyed Charlotte FC away from home, 1–4. They have 10 points in 4 games after that thrashing of 7–2 to Callaghan’s Nashville FC. New England Revolution drew 0–0 against San Jose. The San Jose coached by ex-communicado Bruce Arena. The most noteworthy thing about this game was that Bruce Arena was allowed back in the stadium. For the Revs, they’ve been great in MLS play since April. I could see their unbeaten streak continue for another month unless Kansas, DC, or Montreal actually step it up.
In arbitrary stats, Miami has lost 5 in 7 since April 24th, which is the last time they got shutout. The difference today from then is that they were at home. They’ve also let in 20 goals in 7 games. If they have the cap space, they could make some changes next week since they are one of 2, maybe 3, MLS teams that are are part of the exclusive Club World Cup transfer window that opens on June 1st. They’ll need to do something but it still won’t be in time for when they take on 1st place Philadelphia Union. I don’t see them picking points against Philly, but could get a win against Montreal the week after.
The “worst-record-so-far” LA Galaxy have once again thwarted LAFC in El Traffico. They now have 4 points in 14 games. That’s all.
El Traffico never disappoints
San Diego and Atlanta are my second biggest inaccuracies. For San Diego, it was due to assumptions of past inaugural seasons and lack of scouting what sort of team they could be. They should make the playoffs at the rate they are going. They will have some challenges in the summer with Hirving Lozano, Anibal Godoy, and Luca De la Torre being on the provisional Gold Cup rosters for their respective countries. That said, that doesn’t mean they’ll be on the final roster.
For Atlanta, that firepower up top and with a proper preseason for Miranchuk really had me thinking this team was built for Top 4 of the East. Garth recently spoke about Deila being safe and believing in the team they currently have. Maybe things click for them. They did pull it off last year where they made it to the Wild Card spot, beat CF Montreal, and defeated Inter Miami. They haven’t won since March 29th and their next game is against FC Cincinnati, who is the best ranked away team in MLS.
Looking towards Week 15, I’m most excited for San Diego FC v LA Galaxy in the Western Conference. I do expect San Diego takes the win. In the Eastern Conference, I predict Philadelphia Union beats Inter Miami. They are top of the Supporter’s Shield race.
